QUESTION:
Alexander Graham Bell is most famous for inventing the telephone, but what other item did he also invent in an effort to save U.S. President James Garfield?
(Scroll down for answer)
ANSWER:
The metal detector.
After Garfield was shot in July 1881, his condition was made worse by doctors’ using their unsterilized hands to search for the bullet. As a result, Bell invented a rudimentary metal detector with the hope it would locate the bullet without the need for invasive procedures from doctors.
