Our Approach

Academic Coaching and Skill Building

Our overall approach to learning is that of a hierarchy of needs. Underpinning any academic performance is a solid grounding in Executive Function and/or Study Skills. Without these, a student cannot reach their full academic potential. Similarly, Executive Function is dependent upon a student’s overall wellness - particularly their mental health. A student with anxiety issues will not be able to develop Executive Function skills, and will not then thrive academically. 

Our holistic approach to students allows for a genuinely student-centered learning experience. Students are assessed based on their hierarchy of needs and learning is tailored to their specific needs and goals. This creates an environment where students not only thrive academically, but build confidence, learn metacognition, and become better learners for life.

Ongoing Communication

Reports and Academic Management

Our coaches are able to liaise with the student’s school to ensure that our coaching best supports student learning. We can also coordinate with other key individuals - medical professionals, therapists, or specific teachers. 

Students receive a report at the end of each lesson, visible on your client dashboard. These reports summarize the work completed, highlight the goals for the next session, and outline the between-session check-in. It’s easy to share reports with any part of your student’s learning team. 

An Ethical Approach to Business

As we’ve grown, we’ve built ethical practices into our business model. We believe strongly that private businesses should be ethically structured to best serve their customers, their employees, and their community. We’re constantly striving to improve this as we get bigger, but we are proud to offer the following:

  • Benefits for independent contractors. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we set up a paid health insurance scheme for our contractors (our employees can access this in addition to the benefits they already receive). 

  • A scholarship fund for students in need. 10% of net profits are used to pay for scholarships for students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to access private academic coaching. 

  • Two college consulting scholarships. We offer fully-funded college consulting for students who have been affected by structural disadvantages as well as COVID-19. 

  • An employee profit share scheme. 10% of net profits are shared amongst our employees every quarter. 

  • High pay for coaches. Our starting pay rate for employees and contractors is twice the Seattle average pay for tutors. Despite the pandemic, we raised base pay by 5% in September 2020. 

As we continue to grow, we will continue to add more benefits for our customers and team. Our goal is to do well by everyone—our students and their families, our coaches, and our community.
